WinStar Farm, Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber’s Tourist ($26.80) held off a late charge from defending champion Tepin by a half-length to win the 33rd running of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile for 3-year-olds and up at Santa Anita Park.

Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Joel Rosario, Tourist covered the mile on a firm turf course in 1:31.71, breaking the Breeders’ Cup record of 1:31.78 set by Wise Dan at Santa Anita in 2013.

It is the first Breeders’ Cup victory for the winning partnership, the ninth for Mott and fifth for Rosario and the first in the race for the trainer and rider.

A full field of 14 broke from the post , and 47-1 What a View shot to the front, opening a 4 ½-length lead through the first half-mile in a torrid 44.61 and three-quarters in 1:08.59. Turning into the stretch, Midnight Storm took the lead, but Tourist found room along the rail, split horses and moved to a half-length lead inside 100 yards. Tepin mounted a charge from four wide in the stretch, and closed to take the runner-up spot. Midnight Storm finished third. Limato (IRE), the 3-1 favorite, finished sixth.

"It was a good trip, a perfect trip," Rosario said. "It looked like they were going fast up front and I just wanted to save ground the whole way around and not have to stop him at any point in the race. I had to take a little hold turning for home to keep my position, but after that he got a clear run."

Tourist, a 5-year-old son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow out of Unbridled Melody by 1995 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Unbridled’s Song, was making his third start in the Mile having finished eighth last year at Keeneland and 13th in the 2013 Championships at Santa Anita.
