Juvenile Fillies
Eugene Klein’s Open Mind emerged from between horses in deep stretch and drew off for a 1 ¾-length victory in the fifth running of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs.
In becoming the first New Jersey bred to win a Breeders’ Cup race, Open Mind completed the mile and a sixteenth over a muddy track in 1:46.60 and gave jockey Angel Cordero Jr. his second of four World Championships victories.
Part of a five-horse entry saddled by trainer D. Wayne Lukas, Open Mind led a 1-2-3-6-11 finish for the 7-10 favored entry and gave Lukas the second of his six victories in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Eloquent Minister led the field of 12 through early fractions of :23.40, :47 and 1:12.60 as Open Mind raced near the back of the pack some 15 lengths off the lead after a half-mile.
Open Mind began to move up on the far turn while up front entrymate Some Romance, winner of the Frizette by a nose over Open Mind, had moved to the inside of Eloquent Minister and surged to the lead.
Some Romance held a narrow lead at the eighth pole but the stretch-runners were rapidly closing in with Open Mind surging past five-wide and drawing off to score the third of her four victories in 1988.
Farther out from Open Mind, Darby Shuffle and Lea Lucinda rallied to complete the Lukas sweep of the top three spots.
Open Mind, who followed up her Breeders’ Cup win with a victory in the Demoiselle Stakes, was named Champion 2-year-old filly of 1988. She was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 2011.
