Sacahuista became the third consecutive Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner trained by eventual Hall of Fame member D. Wayne Lukas following the scores by Life’s Magic in 1985 and Lady’s Secret in 1986. Runner-up Clabber Girl also was trained by Lukas to give the conditioner his third one-two finish in a Breeders’ Cup race following the 1985 Distaff of Life’s Magic and Lady’s Secret and Twilight Ridge and Family Style in the 1985 Juvenile Fillies (G1).

The 1987 Distaff had a third Lukas trainee in North Sider, who was named champion older female despite her sixth-place effort.

Fourth in the 1986 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), Sacahuista led throughout en route to a 2 ½-length tally to become the first 3-year-old to win the Distaff. She clocked the 1 ¼ miles in 2:02 4/5 after splits of :23 2/5, :47 1/5, 1:11 3/5 and 1:36 4/5 under future Hall of Fame rider Randy Romero. Oueee Bebe checked in third, four lengths behind Clabber Girl. Sacahuista was the 3-1 second choice behind Infinidad, the fourth-place finisher at 7-10.

Sacahuista prepped for the Distaff by capturing the Spinster Stakes (G1) three weeks earlier. In a racing rarity, she had crossed the finish first in her two starts before the Spinster but was disqualified for interference. The Raja Baba filly was best in the Cotillion Handicap (G3) but was demoted to second. In her next appearance, she won the Ruffian Handicap (G1) before being placed third. Despite those missteps, she received the Eclipse Award as champion three-year-old filly. She returned to action as a four-year-old but retired after three starts.

Bred in Kentucky by G. Watts Humphrey Jr. and William S. Farish, Sacahuista was purchased in Lukas’ name for $670,000 at Keeneland July yearling sale. She campaigned for Lloyd French and Barry Beal.
