2024 Breeders' Cup Turf Picks and Predictions
The second-richest race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Breeders’ Cup Turf is the most prestigious prize on American shores for horses who run on the lawn. Top grass talent from around the world will race 1 ½ miles on the turf course at Del Mar for a $5 million purse and a place in horse racing history. The race is open to horses aged three and above, and it perennially draws the best horses from both North America and abroad.
The likely favorite is Rebel’s Romance for trainer Charlie Appleby; he won this Breeders’ Cup race in 2022 over the grass course at Keeneland, and is having his best year yet in 2024. Top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien always has a strong hand, which includes Emily Upjohn, Illinois, Luxembourg, and Content. Jayarebe, a last-out Group 2 winner in France, and Shahryar, third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 2023, are other leaders among the international contingent. Contenders from the American turf contingent include Far Bridge, Grand Sonata, Gold Phoenix, and Cabo Spirit.

The Breeders' Cup Turf field was drawn Monday, October 30, with morning-line odds released with the draw. Though prices are not final until the race starts, the morning-line odds are an educated forecast and are often a good guide to which horses will take money and who will be long shots.

#2 EMILY UPJOHN
Though this daughter of Sea the Stars seeks her first win this year, she comes into the race off of some close finishes against top-class company. Last out, in the Prix Vermeille, she finished a close third behind Bluestocking and Aventure—horses who went on to finish 1-2 in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1). She ran Bluestocking to a close second in the Pretty Polly (G1) this year as well. 1 ½ miles is the distance at which she has shown her classiest form, including wins in the British Champions Fillies & Mares (G1) and the Coronation Cup (G1). She also reunites with jockey Frankie Dettori, who rode her to both of those top-level wins.
