Godolphin’s Rebel’s Romance (IRE) stormed to the lead at the eighth pole and drew off for a 2 ¼-length victory in the 2022 running of the $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) at Keeneland Race Course.

Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by James Doyle, Rebel’s Romance completed the 1 1/2 miles on a firm course in a course record 2:26.35. The victory was the first in the World Championships for Doyle.

Bye Bye Melvin set the pace while being hounded by Channel Maker through fractions of :24.91, :49.42 and 1:14.15 as Rebel’s Romance raced in between horses in midpack.

On the far turn, Doyle tipped Rebel’s Romance to the outside and began picking off horses to enter the stretch in the clear and full of run. Rebel’s Romance took over at midstretch and was not threatened in the run to the wire.

Stone Age (IRE) saved second by three-quarters of a length over War Like Goddess who finished a neck ahead of Mishriff (IRE).

The victory was worth $2,080,000 and increased his earnings to $2,934,610 with a record of 12-9-0-0. It was also his fifth consecutive win in 2022, which included two wins each in England and in Germany.

Rebel’s Romance is a 4-year-old son of Dubawi out of the Street Cry mare Minidress.

Rebel’s Romance began his career with open-length victories on the synthetic main track at Kempton Park in England in 2020.

Shipped to the Middle East for his 3-year-old season, the Godolphin homebred Dubawi (IRE) gelding opened 2021 with a head victory in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial Sponsored by Hamdan Bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal.

Rebel’s Romance disappointed in his next start when he shipped to Saudi Arabia for the Al Rajhi Bank Saudi Derby, but he bounced back with a big effort in the Group 2 UAE Derby Sponsored by Emirates NBD March 27 at Meydan. Rebel’s Romance proved much the best in the UAE Derby, seizing command in early stretch and pulling away to a facile victory in 1:56.28 for 1 3/16 miles in what turned out to be his final start as a 3-year-old.

After unplaced finishes in his first two starts of 2022 in Dubai, Rebel’s Romance returned to Europe and put together a three-stakes winning streak that was capped by a Group 1 win in the Westminster 132nd Grosser Preis von Berlin Aug. 14 at Hoppegarten.

Stakes-placed Minidress, by Street Cry, is the dam (mother) of Rebel’s Romance. Second dam (maternal grandmother), Short Skirt, was a multiple group stakes winner who placed in the Epsom Oaks.
