The Irish-bred High Chaparral made Breeders’ Cup history in a blink of an eye, or at least a blink that took several minutes to decipher. Trained by Aidan O’Brien for John and Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor, High Chaparral came to the 2002 Breeders’ Cup at Arlington Park having won both the English and Irish Derbies, and burnished even more as the son of Saddler’s Well’s captured the Breeders’ Cup Turf by 1 ½ lengths as the odds on favorite under jockey Mick Kinane. High Chaparral and was named the Champion Male Turf Horse in North America. He didn’t race again until August of the following year, winning the Irish Champion Stakes and finishing third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for the second straight year. He returned to the US in 2003 on a hot October day at Santa Anita Park to defend his Turf title. High Chaparral stalked the early pace and came on strongly in the stretch along the inside. He was challenged by 14-1 Johar out in the center of the track as the two horses hit the wire in a photo finish. With the California crowd still buzzing, the final result was posted 12 minutes later -- a dead heat – the first ever in Breeders’ Cup history. High Chaparral finished his stellar career with 10 wins, six of them Group or Grade 1 victories, in 13 starts, and won his second Male Turf Eclipse Award.
