Macho Uno
USA
Macho Uno capped an incredible afternoon and year for his owner-breeder Frank Stronach and trainer Joe Orseno when he edged Point Given by a nose to win the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. Thirty minutes earlier the Stronach-Orseno camp won the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with Perfect Sting. Macho Uno’s victory clinched Eclipse Award honors as champion two-year-old male and he was considered an early favorite for the following year’s Kentucky Derby but he bypassed the storied race. He did, however, become another kind of Derby winner when he pocketed the Grade 3 Pennsylvania Derby during his three-year-old campaign. As a four-year-old, he won the Grade 2 Massachusetts Handicap and was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic before returning to Stronach’s Adena Springs breeding operation to become a top-notch sire of high class racehorses.
