THE 1993 BREEDERS’ CUP

Santa Anita Park

November 3 & 3, 1993

Jockey Eddie Delahoussaye repeated his performance of the previous year by winning two races, capturing the Sprint on the 7-year-old Cardmania, and then defeating defending champion Paseana in the Distaff on Hollywood Wildcat. Lure became the first back- to-back winner of the Mile since Miesque, coming from the outside post position to roll to a 2 ½ length victory under Mike Smith.  The favored Kotashaan won the Turf by a half length in a thrilling finish over Bien Bien for trainer Richard Mandella.  But the day’s greatest excitement was yet to come.  Bertrando, the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, came off the far turn with lead and looked like the winner in the stretch, until an unknown French horse named Arcangues came down the stretch, swept by Bertrando, a Horse of the Year contender, to win by two lengths under Jerry Bailey. Arcangues went off at odds of 133-1 and returned the biggest payout in Breeders’ Cup history, $269.60 for a $2 win bet.  Turf winner Kotashaan was later named Horse of the Year.
