Look over the list of past winners of the Breeders’ Cup Mile and you’ll see an impressive list of European stars. Goldikova won it three times and Miesque twice. It’s good to be Aidan O’Brien these days. The speedy chestnut is suspended in the moment, neck bowed against her trainer’s hold. Jones braces in the irons, fringe of his white and orange chaps plastered by the wind. But his hands are gentle and the mare is responding, ears pricked, as the two of them blur past in fluid motion.
