Jay Hanley remembers the week last July when they thought they might lose her. The first filly he purchased for his stable, one who took the fledgling owner and partner Sol Kumin on a remarkable journey to the Breeders’ Cup winner’s circle in the 2014 Juvenile Fillies Turf, was deathly ill and battling laminitis, a condition that felled many great horses before her.

There’s little that has avoided California Chrome’s grasp in terms of accomplishments on the racetrack. He’s won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Dubai World Cup and Pacific Classic and has been named Horse of the Year. Yet there is some unfinished business that could be rectified on Saturday.

On second thought, the grass is indeed greener for Found. Though the fabulous filly was entered in the 33rd Breeders’ Cup with a first preference for the $6 million BC Classic on dirt, at Monday’s post-position draw the Coolmore 4-year-old wound up in the Longines $4 million BC Turf where she will attempt to become the third back-to-back winner of the Grade 1 stakes.

Shortly after his 3-year-old colt Connect won the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing, trainer Chad Brown was walking near the racing office at Belmont Park and was offered congratulations by a reporter. With a big smile on his face, he quipped, “Who put grass seed on that course?”

The battle lines for the blockbuster $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff were drawn Monday. There’s Songbird, the undefeated, 11-for-11 3-year-old filly, in post one. Beholder, the third-time champion and two-time Breeders’ Cup winner, will be on the outside in post eight. Stellar Wind, last year’s champion 3-year-oild filly and conqueror of Beholder in their last two meetings, will be in-between them in post five.

California Chrome LLC’s California Chrome and Juddmonte Farms’ Arrogate are the top two morning line favorites in a field of 10 3-year-olds and up set for Saturday’s $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), the climax of the 33rd Breeders’ Cup World Championship races to be run Friday and Saturday (Nov. 4-5) at Santa Anita.

The California sun warmed the flanks of the ponies as the children flocked to look at them. Happy children with flurries of butterflies painted on their faces pointed and chattered to their parents about which pony they wanted to ride. There were Fancy, Cali, Maverick and Chocolate wearing Circle Y western saddles bedecked with colorful horse racing saddle cloths and western headstalls.

Without question, one of the toughest tasks when analyzing Breeders' Cup World Championship races for most U.S. horseplayers is making heads or tails of the European horses that ship in to run. Television replays of overseas races help when studying, but deciphering which of those races were strongest and how European form might translate on America's biggest stage remains a struggle.
