Ingrid and Marcus Jooste’s 5-year-old Legal Eagle (SAF), successfully defended his L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (G1) title Saturday at Kenilworth Racecourse in South Africa with a 2 1/4-length victory over Captain America (SAF) and earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile through the International Breeders’ Cup Challenge.

Statement from Breeders' Cup Limited: "Breeders' Cup has been advised by the California Horse Racing Board that 12 of 13 races from this year's event at Santa Anita, not including the Breeders' Cup Sprint, have been cleared following post-race testing by the Maddy Laboratory at the University of California at Davis. Inquiries relating to testing results or regulatory proceedings should be directed to the CHRB."

It was another spectacular photo finish between a pair of distaffers during the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships. Lady Eli, the 8-5 favorite in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT), was also the sentimental favorite because she had beaten laminitis and returned to the highest levels of racing. But when results flashed on the Santa Anita Park tote board Nov. 5, the daughter of Divine Park fell just short of a miraculous ending to her already remarkable comeback this year.

It wasn't a theft. Highland Reel just ran away with the $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) Nov. 5. Under the guidance of Seamus Heffernan, the 4-year-old Galileo colt set stiff fractions in the 1 1/2-mile race, opened up a daylight lead in the backstretch, and was never threatened late by second-place finisher and favorite Flintshire en route to a 1 3/4-length score at Santa Anita Park.
