If his 2014 Breeders' Cup Mile win was an upset, it was not without precedent. Karakontie, a 3-year-old Bernstein colt owned and bred by Flaxman Holdings Ltd., making his first U.S. start in the Breeders' Cup Mile, was sent off at odds of 30-1 following an 11th place finish in the Qatar Prix de la Foret at Longchamp in October and an eighth in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly in June. The winner of three races in four starts during a promising juvenile campaign, he had not won a race since the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp in May.

But Flaxman, the racing name of the Niarchos family, has a rich history in the Mile, winning the race five times in 17 years, first with Miesque in 1987 and 1988 and more recently with Six Perfections in 2003. Karakontie became their sixth Mile winner when he finished a length ahead of Anodin, a full brother to three-time Mile winner Goldikova.

Karakontie was bred in Japan and is out of the Sunday Silence mare Sun Is Up. He is trained by Jonathan Pease, who won his first Breeders' Cup race with the Flaxman-owned and bred Spinning World in the 1997 Mile.
