The first Pennsylvania-bred to win a Breeders’ Cup race, Go for Wand captured the Juvenile Fillies by 2 3/4 lengths at Gulfstream Park in the sixth edition of the Championships. The victory gave Hall of Fame jockey Randy Romero the last of his three Breeders’ Cup victories and provided trainer Bill Badgett with his initial Championships triumph. Go for Wand earned the 1989 Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly.
Go for Wand won her first race on Sept. 14, 1989 at Belmont Park in her debut. As a 3-year-old, Go for Wand won six Grade 1 races before being fatally injured late in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Belmont Park after dueling with defending race champion Bayakoa. Go for Wand was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1996.
