Jockey:
Y. Saint-Martin
Trainer:
R. Collet
Owner:
Richard C. Strauss
Breeder:
Kilfrush Stud Ltd.

Richard Strauss’ 3-year-old Irish-bred colt Last Tycoon was a top class sprinter in Europe throughout the 1985-86 seasons for French-based trainer Robert Collet, but the son of Try My Best still went to the post as a 36-to-1 longshot in the Mile despite the presence of French champion jockey Yves Saint-Martin.

Saint-Martin used Last Tycoon’s natural speed to stay up close in third for the much of the trip in the full field of 14, caught favorite Sonic Lady in mid-stretch, and held off a furious late charge from Palace Music to win by a head at the wire in his first ever attempt at a distance beyond seven furlongs. The Mile marked his eighth victory and last of 12 career starts.
