Desert Stormer was bred by owner Joanne Nor to be a fast one – and she was. A daughter of leading sire Storm Cat she won at first asking and returned to win her second start by 12 lengths. Always a consistent speedster, she could reel off eye-popping clockings in the early part of a race. Desert Stormer was considered a west coast specialist coming into the 1995 Breeders’ Sprint with a resume of two Grade 3 wins. She would have been a huge longshot facing males, if she wasn’t paired with two other horses as part of the mutual field.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Desert Stormer was tested throughout the 6 furlong Breeders’ Cup Sprint – never leading by more than a head and hitting the wire over Mr. Greely by a neck in a quick 1:09 1/5. Attesting to the quality of her win, Lit de Justice, who finished third, was named Champion Sprinter of 1996.
