H H Aga Khan’s 3-year-old Lashkari was largely overlooked at he was sent off at odds of 53-to-1 in the outstanding field of 11 assembled for the first edition of the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Hollywood Park with French champion jockey Yves Saint-Martin in the saddle for trainer Alain De Royer Dupre.
However, the son of 1971 European Horse of the Year Mill Reef was clearly in the spotlight making history as he rallied to a neck upset victory over 1983 Horse of the Year All Along, becoming the first in a long line of European-trained stars to fly across the Atlantic and win Breeders’ Cup Championship events over the nearly three decades since that memorable afternoon. Lashkari had won modest stakes races in France in his two starts before the Breeders’ Cup, but never had faced the quality of competition he met in the Breeders’ Cup.
