The third time was the charm in the Breeders’ Cup Turf for Theatrical as he outdueled Arc de Triomphe winner Trempolino by a half-length to win the fourth running of the race at Hollywood Park. Theatrical’s triumph in his final race was the first in the Championships for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and fourth of 12 for Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day. The victory earned Theatrical the 1987 Eclipse Award as champion turf male.
Theatrical, who finished 11th in the 1985 Turf and second in the 1986 Turf, began his career in Europe but had the majority of his success in North America where he posted seven of his 10 victories. Theatrical won seven of his final eight starts with six of those victories coming in Grade 1 races.
