Tikkanen

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
M. Smith
Trainer:
J. Pease
Owner:
Augustin Stables (George Strawbridge Jr.)
Breeder:
George Strawbridge Jr.

Tikkanen, named by his owner, George Strawbridge, Jr., a Director of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, after the great Finnish hockey star Esa Tikkanen, had competed in top class company in Ireland, Italy, Germany and France before coming to the US late in his 3-year-old season of 1994. A gray son of 1985 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Cozenne, Tikkanen showed that he liked his new surroundings by winning the grade 1Turf Classic at Belmont Park. Still, against a stellar field in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs, he was sent off at more than 16-1 for trainer John Pease. He was 14th and last through a half-mile, but moved boldly around horses leaving the final turn and was handled hard to the wire outfinishing French star Hatoof by 1 1/2 lengths.
