A year after setting the pace before fading to finish fourth, Buck’s Boy led all the way in the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in defeating Yagli by 1 ¼ lengths. Buck’s Boy gave jockey Shane Sellers his second Breeders’ Cup victory and the first for trainer Noel Hickey. Buck’s Boy received the 1998 Eclipse Award as champion turf male.
Buck’s Boy raced five years with 16 victories that included triumphs at eight tracks. The Illinois-bred gelding won nine stakes, five of them graded. In addition to the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Turf, Buck’s Boy won the Grade 1 Turf Classic Invitational. In his bid to repeat in the 1999 Turf at Gulfstream Park, Buck’s Boy finished third. Buck’s Boy completed his career as a 7-year-old with a victory in the Grade 2 Pan American Handicap.
