Kalanisi (IRE)

Kalanisi was born in Ireland and raced primarily in England but he made a lasting impression far from home despite making just one start in North America. That single start came in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs and Kalanisi’s determined come-from-behind victory secured his place as the Eclipse Award winner as champion turf male. Owned and bred by the legendary stable of the Aga Khan and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Kalanisi came to Churchill Downs after winning a marquee race at the renowned Newmarket racecourse in England. The remarkably consistent runner—never worse than third in 11 career starts—returned to Europe and raced for another season before retiring with earnings of more than $2 million.
