Starine (FR)

Starine (FR)

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
J. Velazquez
Trainer:
R. Frankel
Owner:
Robert Frankel
Breeder:
Catherine DuBois

Less than a month after her owner, late Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel announced her retirement, Starine was brought back to the track and completed her rise from French-bred claiming horse to Grade 1 winner with a victory in the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Starine won six of 22 starts in her native country before being purchased by Frankel in 2001 and imported to North America, where she ran second in her debut, the Grade 3 Gallorette at Pimlico Race Course.

She would win the Diana at Saratoga, then a Grade 2 race, and the Grade 1 Matriarch at Hollywood Park that year, finishing second in both the Grade 2 Santa Ana Handicap and Grade 1 Gamely Breeders’ Cup Handicap in 2002 prior to her come-from-behind three-quarter length triumph in the Breeders’ Cup in what would be her final career start.
