Trainer Wally Dollase mapped out an ambitious schedule for Jewel Princess on the road to Canada for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. All nine starts were in graded stakes races, starting in February and lasting until late October and she was never out of the top 3, with 5 wins, 3 seconds, and 1 third-place finish. By season’s end, she defeated champion Serena’s Song three times.
Jockey Corey Nakatani took over the reins in mid-season and put in a picture perfect ride in the Breeders’ Cup. Top Secret tried to steal the race by setting a slow pace with Serena’s Song following in second. Nakatani saved ground along the inside and waited to ask Jewel Princess for her top effort as they rounded the final turn. She responded accordingly and strongly went between a tiring Top Secret and game Serena’s Song to pull away to a 1 1/2 length score.
