Gaining control shortly after the start, Success Express held off a late bid from Regal Classic to win the fourth Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by 1 3/4 lengths at Hollywood Park. For jockey Jose Santos, it was his second of seven victories in the Championships and the sixth for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Success Express represented the fourth of six Breeders’ Cup winners for owner Eugene Klein.
Success Express needed three starts to post his first victory, that coming at Belmont Park on Sept. 14, 1987. Success Express followed that victory with stakes triumphs at Canterbury Park in Minnesota and Louisiana Downs before going to California where he finished fourth in the Grade 1 Norfolk prior to his Breeders’ Cup victory.
