California Flag, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park, has started in every edition of the race since its 2008 inauguration. His running style can be described as “all or nothing.” In a 26-race career spread over six years, the California-bred gelding has won 11 times and finished third twice. Winless in his first year of competition at age three in 2007, he won half of his ten starts at four including two graded stakes in Southern California. His win in the Turf Sprint earned him the opportunity to take on the world’s best sprinters in Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates where he was off the board and third, respectively. He returned to his winning ways a few months later in a stakes race at Del Mar before closing the year in the 2010 Turf Sprint (G2) at Churchill Downs. In 2011, California Flag won the Morvich Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita for the third time. In 2012, the eight-year-old won the San Simeon Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita in his only start through Oct. 10.
