Maryfield

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
E. Trujillo
Trainer:
D. O'Neill
Owner:
Mark Gorman, Nick Mestrandrea & Jim Perry
Breeder:
Mike Carroll & John C. Harvey Jr.

It was quite a debut for both the Filly and Mare Sprint and jockey Elvis Trujillo, who showed no signs of nerves with his first Breeders’ Cup mount by rallying Maryfield to a half-length victory over 43-1 long shot Miraculous Miss in the inaugural six-furlong sprint on a raw day over a sloppy track at Monmouth Park.

Trained by California-based Doug O’Neill, the bay daughter of Elusive Quality became only the fourth Canadian-bred to win a Breeders’ Cup event. She covered three-quarters of a mile in 1:09.85. Combined with victories in the Distaff and Ballerina in New York, the 6-year-old mare went on to win the Eclipse Award for top Female Sprinter that year and was later inducted into the Canadian Racing Hall of Fame in 2009 for owners Mark Gorman, George Mastrandrea and Jim Perry.
