Eleven months after winning his first race in his first start and a week after winning the Discovery Handicap (Grade 3), Proud Truth returned to the Aqueduct winner’s circle following a last-to-first triumph in the second Breeders’ Cup Classic. Proud Truth caught Gate Dancer late to win by a head and give Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez his second of two Breeders’ Cup victories in the 1985 Championships. The Classic victory was the first for Darby Dan Farm and trainer John Veitch.
A winner at four tracks during his career, Proud Truth also recorded Grade 1 victories in the Florida Derby and Peter Pan and Grade 2 scores in the Fountain of Youth and Tidal Handicap. Proud Truth died in 2005.
