Darkness had descended on the Twin Spires as an all-star field came on the track for the 1988 Classic with Dorothy and Pamela Scharbauer’s 1987 Kentucky Derby hero Alysheba the 3-to-2 favorite under Chris McCarron. The son of Alydar rallied on the outside to take command at the top stretch and held off a game challenge from Seeking the Gold to score by a half-length, completing a marvelous career for trainer Jack Van Berg

Alysheba was making his third Breeders’ Cup appearance after finishing third behind Capote as a 33-to-1 longshot in the Juvenile and second by a nose in a heartbreak finish with 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in the 1987 Classic at Hollywood Park. Voted Eclipse champion 3-year-old in 1987 after sweeping the Derby and Preakness over arch-rival Bet Twice, Alysheba won seven of nine in 1988 and was acclaimed Eclipse champion handicap horse and Horse of the Year.
