Concern

Concern

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
J. Bailey
Trainer:
R. Small
Owner:
Robert E. Meyerhoff
Breeder:
Robert E. Meyerhoff

Two concerns the connections of Concern never had were whether he could handle a distance or that he would get in an early speed duel. Robert E. Meyerhoff the owner and breeder of Concern also owned and bred his sire, Broad Brush and both colts were trained by Richard Small. All of Concern’s best races came from far behind the early pacesetters and he never won a race shorter than a mile. In the 11th Breeders’ Cup Classic he faced the best of his generation in Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin and Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Tabasco Cat. He ran 14th and last for most of the Classic, but when urged by jockey Jerry Bailey he circled the field. His momentum took him past Tabasco Cat by a neck at the wire as announcer Tom Durkin declared, “It’s Concern from out of the clouds!”
