Awesome Again overhauled 1997 Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm in deep stretch to win the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic by three-quarters of a length, completing an unbeaten season over what is arguably one of the deepest Classic fields assembled in Championships history. Also trailing Awesome Again that day were European star Swain, 1998 Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop, Skip Away, who was voted Horse of the Year in 1998, Touch Gold, the 1997 Belmont winner and Gentlemen, a multiple Grade 1 winner.

Awesome Again gave Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day his 10th of 12 Championships victories and trainer Pat Byrne his third Breeders’ Cup triumph. Awesome Again won races at five tracks in his careers and won six graded stakes included the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga and the Grade 2 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.
