Finest City not only captured her first graded stakes win in the Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos in late April, but did it in track record time. She also gave her trainer Ian Kruljac the first graded stakes win of his career.
Well back in the early going, Finest City swung four wide turning for home and hit the wire in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint in 1:14.48 to set a track record. The previous mark was 1:14.60.
The 4-year-old City Zip daughter, who didn’t race at two, won an allowance race at Del Mar Oct. 31. In her first stakes attempt, the Grade 1 La Brea at Santa Anita Dec. 26, she finished sixth. She ran a big second to 64-1 shot Lost Bus in the Grade 2 Santa Monica S. to start off her four-year-old season, and fourth in Grade 3 Las Flores in March, both at Breeders’ Cup host track Santa Anita.
Following her Great Lady M win, Finest City has run hard, finishing third in the Grade 1 Vanity Mile Stakes and fourth in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon, which was her first try at two turns on the turf.
She closed well to run third in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes at a mile and an eighth on Labor Day weekend in her final Breeders’ Cup prep.
