Drefong, with only five lifetime starts, will likely be one of the lightest-raced 3-year-olds entered in this year’s Breeders’ Cup.
The Gio Ponti colt has tasted defeat just once in those five starts. He ran fifth in his first outing last fall at Santa Anita. After a maiden win and two allowance/optional claiming scores in California, trainer Bob Baffert shipped him to Saratoga for the Grade 1 King’s Bishop.
Drefong rewarded his trainer’s expectations, and then some, with a gate to wire score August 27, winning by three and a quarter lengths in 1:21.25 for the seven furlongs.
"The horse has always been incredibly fast," Baffert said after the race. "We freshened him up and this was the race we were looking forward to. He's got a great mind. I've always thought he was cut out to be this kind of horse, but he had to prove it today.”
The TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint will be Drefong’s first start against older horses, and he will square off against veterans such as Joking, A.P. Indian, and stablemate Lord Nelson.
