Drefong

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
Martin Garcia
Trainer:
Bob Baffert
Owner:
Baoma Corporation

Drefong faced his elders for the first time in the G1 TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and he not only stared them down, he wore them down to score by a length and a quarter in a sparkling 1:08.79 over 8-5 choice Masochistic.

The victory gave trainer Bob Baffert his fifth Breeders’ Cup Sprint score and 13th Breeders’ Cup championship, and jockey Martin Garcia his fourth Breeders’ Cup trophy.

The lightly raced 3-year-old from Gio Ponti’s first crop came into the Sprint with just one loss in five starts, that coming in his first lifetime start as a 2-year-old.

After a maiden win and two allowance/optional claiming scores this year in California, Baffert upped the ante and shipped the Baoma Corporation’s colt to Saratoga for the G1 King’s Bishop.

Drefong rewarded his trainer’s expectations, and then some, with a gate to wire score August 27, winning by 3 1/4 lengths in 1:21.25 for the seven furlongs in the King’s Bishop.

Sent off the 4-1 third choice in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Drefong was bumped soundly at the start breaking from post two, but recovered like a veteran. He edged to the front on the inside, but Masochistic made the top at the half in 44:03.

Drefong found another gear and the two slugged it out down the stretch, until the 3-year-old put the favorite away in deep stretch. Masochistic had just enough left to hold off Mind Your Biscuits, who closed from the rear to run third.

“What a racehorse. What a race,” said an elated Baffert. “He’s been getting better and better, but we didn’t know how fast he was. He had trained so well coming into this race, I thought he was peaking.

"I knew there was going to be a little bit of a speed duel. I was worried about the inside post because it would force his hand, but Martin let him ease up there without forcing the issue," Baffert said. "Masochistic is a really good horse, and I thought we were going to run second. Those two horses really threw down in the stretch."

Drefong is the first racehorse for Charlie Chu’s Baoma Corporation. His wife, Susan, got involved as an owner only four years ago, and her first runner was 2013 G3 Southwest Stakes winner Super Ninety-Nine. She campaigned Chitu, who won the G3 Sunland Derby, the following year.

Those successes prompted Mr. Chu to venture into ownership. Drefong was a $450,000 yearling purchase at the 2014 Keeneland September Sale. The win in the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint boosted the colt’s lifetime earnings to $1,203,040.
