Joshua Tree was given a quote of 20-1 for the Investec Derby with William Hill after causing something of an upset in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The son of Montjeu looked to be the Ballydoyle second string after stable jockey Johnny Murtagh opted for Mikhail Glinka.

High Twelve was well backed during the morning, but sweated up badly pre-race and despite running on for fourth, was never able to land a blow under Jimmy Fortune.

The winner, in contrast, was settled midfield in the opening stages, before sweeping to the lead before the furlong marker under Colm O’Donoghue.

This manoeuvre hampered Vale Of York, Frozen Power and Timely Jazz, which prompted a stewards' inquiry, but no action was taken.

The winner stayed on bravely from this point and was always holding Waseet and Vale Of York on the run in.

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien was pleased with the performance and said: “He’s a lovely colt and made a pleasing debut. He was beaten on his second start but learnt an awful lot that day.

“He's progressing nicely and has plenty of entries in all the top races.”

“He absolutely could go next for the Racing Post Trophy and if he was to run again this season that is where he could go.”

Part-owner Derek Smith added: “Aidan thought that both horses would step up today and he did do it nicely.

“I would not back him at any price for the Derby as it is so far away. As a former bookmaker I suppose 33-1 would be the biggest they would go.”
