The V Foundation for Cancer Research is the primary non-profit beneficiary for the 27th running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships. The Breeders’ Cup and The V Foundation partnered in 2009 for the first time. Over the past year we have made great strides in bringing awareness to The V foundation as well as helping to raise funds. Due to this success we are excited about the continuation of this partnership and to have The V Foundation back as our primary beneficiary for the 2010 Breeders’ Cup World Championship.
The Breeders' Cup has set a goal to raise a minimum of $100,000 for The V Foundation, the organization founded by ESPN and Jim Valvano in 1993. The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, the legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993, The Foundation has raised more than $95 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide. It awards 100 percent of direct cash donations and net proceeds of events directly to cancer research and related programs.
The Foundation, which has received seven consecutive top 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator, awards grants through a competitive awards process strictly supervised by a Scientific Advisory Board.
Breeders' Cup will also support the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) for the second consecutive year. The TCA was formed in 1990 to raise funds for those charities in the Thoroughbred industry which provide a better life for Thoroughbreds both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue, and research and by helping the people who work with them. In 2010, TCA granted $860,672 in funds to 81 Thoroughbred industry related non-profits.
Breeders' Cup Charities was founded in 2008 as the official charity outreach program for the Breeders' Cup World Championships. The program is designed to support a variety of important causes and has raised over $750,000 to date. The program will continue to support Equine Charities such as, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, CARMA, and The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, among others. |
