DamDay of Victory
Even when things didn’t go her way, Finley’sluckycharm found her way to the winner’s circle as she does almost every time she races. The speedster prefers to be the pacesetter, but showcased another dimension when capturing the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland Oct. 7. The victory gave her an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint where she is sure to rank among the favorites for the race.
“She changed our game plan on us,” jockey Brian Hernandez said after the race. “I was really proud of her that last eighth of a mile, how fast she came home. She just didn’t break as sharp as she normally does, but with her works lately, she’s been turning off and running home pretty good. So, I never really panicked. I just trusted in her and she got us there.”
Finley’sluckycharm is trained by Bret Calhoun, who used the same race as a steppingstone to winning his first Filly & Mare Sprint with subsequent Eclipse Award champion Dubai Majesty in 2010. Calhoun will be returning to Del Mar for the first time since the summer of 2008 when he spent several weeks at the seaside track with San Clemente Handicap winner Storm Mesa.
Calhoun annually ranks among the nation’s leading trainers with his stable based primarily at Churchill Downs and Fair Grounds. One of his longtime clients is Carl Moore with whom he teamed to win the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint with Chamberlain Bridge. Moore purchased Finley’sluckycharm for $77,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale.
