Curlin's Approval

Watch Race Replay

In his long tenure as owner, breeder and trainer, Happy Alter has never been represented by a Breeders’ Cup starter. That will change this year with Curlin’s Approval. A mainstay on the Florida circuit, Alter has trained the winners of more than 600 races. He is perhaps best known for winning the 1991 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park with Jolie’s Halo. The horse went on to make two appearances in Breeders’ Cup races but with a different trainer.

Alter is the breeder of Curlin’s Approval and shares ownership with Bridlewood Farm.

“She’s Kentucky-bred but she was raised at Bridlewood Farm (in Ocala, Florida), where I have had horses for 30 years,” Alter said.

His association with Curlin’s Approval extends even farther. He bred, trained and co-owned her stakes-placed maternal grandmother Wonderful Mom, a six-time winner in 38 starts during the 1980s. That quality was not passed on to her daughter Withmom’sapproval, who never hit the board in four starts but her mating to 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Curlin produced Curlin’s Approval.

Curlin’s Approval flashed her brilliance when she won her career debut at Gulfstream Park in late spring of 2016. By year’s end she was a stakes winner. Except for two off-the-board finishes in Kentucky, she has made nine of her first 11 starts at Gulfstream Park.
