By the Moon is back for a third a try in the Breeders’ Cup after contesting the 2016 Filly & Mare Sprint and 2014 Juvenile Fillies. She solidified her place this year by capturing the “Win and You’re In” Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga Race Course August 26.

By the Moon was bred by Samantha Siegel and campaigns under her Jay Em Ess Stable banner that originated with her late parents Jan and Mace. By the Moon’s mother, By the Light, also raced for the family. Siegel became one of trainer Michelle Nevin’s original clients when Nevin launched her own career in 2013 after working as a key assistant to Rick Dutrow. During her time with Dutrow, Nevin was By the Light’s exercise rider and served the same role with 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, By the Moon has a similar record that boasts 10 wins in 20 starts with earnings of nearly $1 million. Both were victorious in their career debuts. But, while By the Light competed primarily in restricted races against fellow New York-breds, By the Moon has stayed exclusively in top tier events. She earned her first Grade 1 triumph in the 2014 Frizette Stakes while racing for just the third time.
