American Gal

American Gal

American Gal returns to the Breeders’ Cup after finishing third as the favorite in last year’s 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. In winning the seven-furlong Longines Test Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on August 5, she emphasized her preference for distances of less than one mile, and is now perfect in four starts in sprints.

"I have to think seven-eighths is such a good distance for her,” trainer Simon Callaghan said. “At a mile, she's still going to be very good, but at the back of my mind, seven-eighths is where she's going to be spectacular."

Owner-breeder Kaleem Shah led American Gal into the winner’s circle after her Test triumph. The moment was especially gratifying for Shah who raced both of her parents. Her father, Concord Point, won the Ohio Derby and West Virginia Derby in 2010 and her mother, American Story, was graded stakes placed. Shah offered the mare at auction in 2011 but opted to retain her when bidding stalled at $295,000. Bred to Concord Point, she produced Americanize, a solid allowance performer on the West Coast. Her second foal is American Gal.

American Gal launched her career for trainer Bob Baffert before he and Shah parted ways late last year. The two enjoyed eight years of good fortune together including winning the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Bayern and the aforementioned success with Concord Point and American Story.
