Dacita (CHI)

Watch Race Replay

After a minor hoof injury prevented her from starting in the 2016 Filly & Mare Turf and nearly sent her into retirement, Dacita has a guaranteed spot in the gate this year after capturing the “Win and You’re In” Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington Park. This will be her second appearance in the Filly & Mare Turf following her unplaced finish as the second choice in 2015, while making her second start outside her native Chile where she set four course records.

Those efforts came to the attention of Pete Bradley who teamed with Sheep Pond Partners to buy her.

“Her turn of foot was on display down there and certainly was a factor in my decision to purchase her,” the Lexington, Kentucky-based bloodstock and racing adviser said.

Dacita rewarded her new owners by winning the 2015 Ballston Spa Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in her North American debut. By the end of 2016, she had banked nearly $1 million for them, but her racing future was in jeopardy. As the favorite in the Canadian Stakes at Woodbine, Dacita was edged by a nose and emerged from the race with a bruised foot. At the time, her owners considered selling her as a broodmare but opted to point for a 6-year-old campaign when the setback proved minor.

She returned in May as the runner-up in Belmont Park’s Beaugay Stakes and was off-the-board in the New York Stakes at the same track in June prior to her Beverly D. score.

“That was some run,” Bradley said a few days after the race. “She’s not the easiest to train, mentally, and she has some hoof issues but I’d say that was the best race of her career. She makes it look easier than it probably is. Now that we have the ‘Win and You’re In,’ our sights are set on Breeders’ Cup.”
