Vale Dori (Arg)

Vale Dori (ARG)

Vale Dori (ARG), who has raced on three continents, is enjoying her best season of racing yet at age five.

Bred in Argentina — a country that produced dual Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Bayakoa [1989 and 1990] and 1992 Distaff champion Paseana — Vale Dori has four wins and a second in five starts at the highest level thus far this year. She strung together six consecutive wins that stretched from October of last year through May.

The daughter of Asiatic Boy (Arg) had three starts in her native country, including a group one win before being purchased privately prior to the 2016 Dubai International Racing Carnival, where she ran second in the UAE Oaks and fourth in the UAE Derby.

Her first stakes score in the United States — fittingly the G2 Bayakoa Handicap in early December — marked the first U.S. stakes victory for her owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, who also owned the winner’s sire.

“I was surprised to find out how much horse I had,” said jockey Mike Smith, who was aboard for the Bayakoa victory. “I gave her one little bit of encouragement and she just threw me in the back seat. She’s got some kick. She’s going to get better, too. I got on this filly when they first brought her here and she was all nervous. But now she’s cool and calm. Have to give a lot of credit to Bob [trainer Bob Baffert] and his crew. They’ve brought her far along.”

Vale Dori then proceeded to rattle off victories in the La Canada, Santa Maria, Santa Margarita, and Adoration, all graded Santa Anita stakes. She fought a ding-dong battle with Stellar Wind in the Beholder Stakes, falling short of another win by a mere neck in her next out.

With nine wins and only one off-the-board finish in 15 lifetime starts, Vale Dori recently topped the million-dollar mark in earnings.
