I'm A Chatterbox
I'm a Chatterbox
I’m a Chatterbox had lots of people talking when she roared home to a seventh-length victory in the $500,000 Spinster Stakes Oct. 9 at Keeneland, setting herself on a path for a repeat trip to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. It was her third victory of the year and second Grade 1 triumph following the $750,000 Delaware Handicap July 16.
I’m a Chatterbox has been one of the most consistent performers of her generation, winning half of her 16 career starts and placing five times. The only time she has been worse than fourth was in last year’s Distaff when she checked in eighth after a troubled trip.
Despite her loss last year, trainer Larry Jones is confident that I’m a Chatterbox is ready to take on the likes of champions Beholder, Stellar Wind, and Songbird.
“I think this may be the deepest Distaff that I have seen in a long time,” Jones said after the Spinster. “There’s seven really good horses. I’m putting her right there with them.”
The striking chestnut filly races for her breeders Fletcher and Carolyn Gray, who are primarily commercial breeders, but do keep yearlings that don’t make their reserves at the sale. When bidding for I’m a Chatterbox stopped at $30,000 at the 2013 September Keeneland yearling sale and she subsequently had to be withdrawn from a 2-year-old sale, the Grays decided to keep the filly. It turned out to be a wise move. To date, she has amassed earnings of $2,209,614.
