Practical Joke

Practical Joke

Practical Joke is known for giving his best effort in his races. That grit produced an emphatic come-from-behind victory in the H. Allen Jerkens Stakes (formerly called the King’s Bishop Stakes) at Saratoga Race Course August 26.

“We've asked him to do a lot of different things and he keeps showing up for us,” trainer Chad Brown said. “We have a lot of respect for this horse.”

After winning his first three starts, Practical Joke was third in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita last year. He remained among the cream of his crop at three and earned a start in the Kentucky Derby in which he checked in fifth and continued to blossom as the season progressed.

Practical Joke was bred by Whispering Oaks Farm, a Paris, Kentucky facility owned and operated by brothers Keith and Allen Crupper. They sold Practical Joke as a newly turned yearling at the 2015 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale for $135,000. He returned to the Keeneland auction that September where he was sold for $240,000.

He races for Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence who also campaign 2017 Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing. Klarman has owned Thoroughbreds since 2006 and has been in partnership with Lawrence since 2006. Together they own dozens of racehorses. Klarman is president of Baupost Group, a hedge fund firm headquartered in Boston.
