Mor Spirit

Mor Spirit had potential written all over him when he strutted into the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton Co.’s premiere 2-year-olds in training sale at Gulfstream Park on March 2, 2015. Bidders recognized that untapped talent and he exited with a $650,000 price tag. Seven months later, he started making a return on that investment when finishing second in his career debut for owner Michael Lund Petersen. He subsequently has banked more than double his purchase price.

Trainer Bob Baffert credits Petersen for allowing the colt to have time off after he finished 10th in the 2016 Kentucky Derby. He returned to action in December with a fourth in the Malibu Stakes and a second in the San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita February.

Mor Spirit then won three in a row, capped by the one mile Metropolitan Handicap June 10 at Belmont Park.

“He deserves to win a race like this,” Baffert told Daily Racing Form after the Met Mile. “This is what we were pointing for with him. After the Derby, we freshened him up and said we’re going to have fun with him. So far, he’s been golden.”
