Sadler's Joy

Watch Race Replay

Sadler’s Joy unleashed a powerful stretch run to win the Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga Race Course August 26 to earn a guaranteed spot in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf.

“Every time you watch it, it's more exciting," trainer Tom Albertrani said. "You look at the ground that he closes, it was [thrilling]. He always tries and always runs hard. It's all about getting the right trip in these kinds of races.”

Unraced at two, Sadler’s Joy was an also-ran in his first three starts prior to winning his next three starts. Elevated to the graded stakes ranks, Sadler’s Joy has been ultra-consistent for owner-breeder Woodslane Farm of Rene and Lauren Woolcott. They established their facility about a decade ago in The Plains, Virginia after being involved in steeplechase racing since 1991.

“He’s a big horse and he needed time and we aren’t pushy with our horses,” Lauren Woolcott told Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. “We try to listen to them. It’s taken a while for us to get a team that all speaks the same language. We built a team that communicates really well.”

Woodslane also bred 2014 Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, a two-time starter in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The offered him at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale but opted to sell him privately when he failed to reach their minimum price.

Sadler’s Joy is a son of Kitten’s Joy, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and Eclipse Award champion male grass horse in 2004.
