Dr. Anne Gillespie

Consultant in occupational and general medicine at hospitals in Glasgow and London. The two cities are far enough apart (397 miles) for her work to take up all her time but she has been able to enjoy racing, first as an owner and then as a breeder, for the past 10 years ... Bought her first horse, Lifewatch Vision, as a 2-year-old in training with Mark Johnston, early in 1989. He won eight times for her but neither of her next two horses, Oh So Well and Life Watch, reached the track ... Oh So Well, the dam of Dark Moondancer, was injured before she had a chance to show any ability. Gillespie "wondered what to do next. I didn't know much about breeding but I knew Mrs. Lennie Peacock, so the mare went to her." Mrs. Peacock's Manor House Stud is close to Johnston's stables at Middleham, Yorkshire ... Oh So Well was worth breeding, being by Sadler's Wells from the brilliantly fast Soba, winner of 11 of her 14 races. Soba ended her career a group III winner and group I second-placed ... Oh So Well produced Dance to The Moon, who placed in both her races before breaking a leg in training; Dances With Dreams, a winner at Ascot in her debut and a close fourth in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas), and as her third foal, Dark Moondancer. He raced for Gillespie until being sold privately to Beniamino Arbib at the end of 1998 ... Gillespie still has the mare, who is in foal to Grand Lodge, and she sold a yearling full brother to Dances With Dreams (by Be My Chief) for 100,000 guineas ($171,000) at Newmarket on Sept. 30. She also still has Dances With Dreams and her yearling filly by Machiavellian ... But she has reduced her involvement in ownership to a quarter-share in Saddlers' Song, a 2-year-old with Patrick Haslam. She sold the dam of this filly, Life Watch, in foal to Polish Precedent two years ago and the resulting yearling was bought by Sheikh Mohammed for about $228,000 at Deauville in August.
